This book is the start of a great series, but even by itself it’s a fantastic adventure. Over the course of the story, Pitt falls in love, finds his calling, and becomes a whole new man. The narrator, Pitt, then proceeds to recount the series of events that lead to his losing his CPA job, learning that monsters are real, and being recruited to hunt monsters for fun and profit with Monster Hunter International, the oldest and most successful monster hunting company in America. The reader’s immediately curious as to the details while at the same time remembering back to a time when they had a similar temptation with their own jobs. I was able to throw my incompetent jackass of a boss from a fourteenth-story window.” “On one otherwise normal Tuesday evening I had the chance to live the American dream. The book begins with a hook that will engage most anyone who’s ever held a job:”On one otherwise normal Tuesday evening I had the chance to live the American dream. Correia’s first series- Monster Hunter International-begins with the titular novel, and tells the story of how the main character, Owen Zastava Pitt: accountant, becomes aware that there are monsters in this world and decides to dedicate his life to protecting humanity from them. And the worlds he’s built grow more vast and detailed with each story told. His characters are deep, complex, and relatable. His stories are simple, straightforward, and easy to understand. Correia has affected a style that resonates with many people, and he can write engagingly in both first-person and third-person. The reason that I so readily suggest these books is simple: they’re really, really good books. I’ve read his Monster Hunter International and Grimnoir Chronicles series a number of times, and have suggested them to a number of people-including getting a friend to read most of them during a couple road trips that lead to him getting hooked and suggesting the books to a handful of other people who’ve also become fans. Larry Correia is one of my favorite authors currently writing.
